DIAGNOSE – BATTERY DIES DURING START ATTEMPT
SYMPTOM SUMMARY
The battery goes dead or will not start the vehicle. The engine may crank slowly for a short period then fail to crank over.
USUAL CAUSE
The battery provides the necessary energy to start the vehicle. The ignition switch will route power from the battery to the starter motor to crank the engine. Once the engine is started, the alternator will re-charge the battery and provide the necessary electrical power to operate the vehicle’s electrical system. If the alternator is defective, the battery will not recharge once the engine is started. If there is an electrical load that is on such as a glove box or courtesy light that remains on at all times, this will also drain the battery over an extended period of time. Batteries can also fail internally which can cause them to self discharge.
DIAGNOSIS
If the engine can be started via a jump start and the battery light comes on, you should suspect a failure in the charging system. You should refer to the article “Battery Light On” on this website for diagnosis of this symptom. It will be necessary to determine whether the battery is defective or there is some electrical load on the battery causing it to drain over an extended period of time. Most repair shops or part stores can charge and test the battery for a nominal fee. This should be the first step in the diagnosis. You should also inspect for electrical loads that are present even after the vehicle is shut off. The hood, trunk, and glove box lamp should be inspected to ensure they are off when the corresponding door is closed. Temporarily removing the bulb to determine if the symptom is eliminated can isolate which circuit is the cause.

General Information of OBDII Tools
Safety Precautions and Warnings
To prevent personal injury or damage to vehicles and/or the scan tool, read this instruction manual first and observe the following safety precautions at a minimum whenever working on a vehicle:
>Always perform automotive testing in a safe environment.
>Wear safety eye protection that meets ANSI standards.
>Keep clothing, hair, hands, tools, test equipment, etc. away from all moving or hot engine parts.
>Operate the vehicle in a well ventilated work area: Exhaust gases are poisonous.
>Put blocks in front of the drive wheels and never leave the vehicle unattended while running tests.
>Use extreme caution when working around the ignition coil, distributor cap, ignition wires and spark plugs. These components create hazardous voltages when the engine is
running.
>Put the transmission in PARK (for automatic transmission) or NEUTRAL (for manual transmission) and make sure the parking brake is engaged.
>Keep a fire extinguisher suitable for gasoline/chemical/ electrical fires nearby.
>Don’t connect or disconnect any test equipment while the ignition is on or the engine is running.
>Keep the scan tool dry, clean, free from oil/water or grease. Use a mild detergent on a clean cloth to clean the outside of the scan tool, when necessary.
On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) II
The first generation of On-Board Diagnostics (called OBD I) was developed by the California Air Resources Board (ARB) and implemented in 1988 to monitor some of the emission control components on vehicles. As technology evolved and the desire to improve the On-Board Diagnostic system increased, a new generation of On-Board Diagnostic system was developed. This second generation of On-Board Diagnostic regulations is called "OBD II".
The OBD II system is designed to monitor emission control systems and key engine components by performing either continuous or periodic tests of specific components and vehicle conditions. When a problem is detected, the OBD II system turns on a warning lamp (MIL) on the vehicle instrument panel to alert the driver typically by the phrase of “Check Engine” or “Service Engine Soon”. The system will also store important information about the detected malfunction so that a technician can accurately find and fix the problem. Here below follow three pieces of such valuable information:
1) Whether the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) is commanded 'on' or 'off';
2) Which, if any, Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are stored;
3) Readiness Monitor status.
Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)
OBD II Diagnostic Trouble Codes are codes that are stored by the on-board computer diagnostic system in response to a problem found in the vehicle.
These codes identify a particular problem area and are intended to provide you with a guide as to where a fault might be occurring within a vehicle.
OBD II Diagnostic Trouble Codes consists of a five-digit alphanumeric code. The first character, a letter, identifies which control system sets the code. The other four characters, all numbers, provide additional information on where the DTC originated and the operating conditions that caused it to set.
Location of the Data Link Connector (DLC)
The DLC (Data Link Connector or Diagnostic Link Connector) is the standardized 16-cavity connector where diagnostic scan tools interface with the vehicle's on-board computer. The DLC is usually located 12 inches from the center of the instrument panel (dash),
under or around the driver’s side for most vehicles. If Data Link Connector is not located under dashboard, a label should be there telling location. For some Asian and European vehicles, the DLC is located behind the ashtray and the ashtray must be removed to access
the connector. If the DLC cannot be found, refer to the vehicle’s service manual for the location.
OBD II Readiness Monitors
An important part of a vehicle’s OBD II system is the Readiness Monitors, which are indicators used to find out if all of the emissions components have been evaluated by the OBD II system. They are running periodic tests on specific systems and components to ensure
that they are performing within allowable limits.
Currently, there are eleven OBD II Readiness Monitors (or I/M Monitors) defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Not all monitors are supported by all vehicles and the exact number of monitors in any vehicle depends on the motor vehicle manufacturer’s emissions control strategy.
Continuous Monitors -- Some of the vehicle components or systems are continuously tested by the vehicle’s OBD II system, while others are tested only under specific vehicle operating conditions. The continuously monitored components listed below are always ready:
1)Misfire
2)Fuel System
3)Comprehensive Components (CCM)
Once the vehicle is running, the OBD II system is continuously checking the above components, monitoring key engine sensors, watching for engine misfire, and monitoring fuel demands.
Non-Continuous Monitors -- Unlike the continuous monitors, many emissions and engine system components require the vehicle to be operated under specific conditions before the monitor is ready. These monitors are termed non-continuous monitors. For different ignition type engines, the available monitors are different too.
The following monitors are to be used for spark ignition engines only:
1) EGR System
2) O2 Sensors
3) Catalyst
4) Evaporative System
5) O2 Sensor Heater
6) Secondary air
7) Heated Catalyst
The following monitors are to be used for compression ignition engines only:
1) EGR System
2) NMHC Catalyst
3) NOx aftertreatment
4) Boost pressure system
5) Exhaust gas sensor
6) PM filter
OBD II Monitor Readiness Status
OBD II systems must indicate whether or not the vehicle’s PCM’s monitor system has completed testing on each component.
Components that have been tested will be reported as “Ready”, or “Complete”, meaning they have been tested by the OBD II system.
The purpose of recording readiness status is to allow inspectors to determine if the vehicle’s OBD II system has tested all the components and/or systems.
The power-train control module (PCM) sets a monitor to “Ready” or “Complete” after an appropriate drive cycle has been performed. The drive cycle that enables a monitor and sets readiness codes to “Ready” varies for each individual monitor. Once a monitor is set as “Ready”
or “Complete”, it will remain in this state. A number of factors, including erasing of diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) with a scan tool or a disconnected battery, can result in Readiness Monitors being set to “Not Ready”. Since the three continuous monitors are constantly evaluating, they will be reported as “Ready” all of the time. If testing of a particular supported non-continuous monitor has not been completed, the monitor status will be reported as “Not Complete” or “Not Ready.”
In order for the OBD monitor system to become ready, the vehicle should be driven under a variety of normal operating conditions. These operating conditions may include a mix of highway driving and stop and go, city type driving, and at least one overnight-off period.
For specific information on getting your vehicle’s OBD monitor system ready, please consult your vehicle owner’s manual.
OBD II Definitions
Power-train Control Module (PCM) -- OBD II terminology for the on-board computer that controls engine and drive train.
Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) -- Malfunction Indicator Light (Service Engine Soon, Check Engine) is a term used for the light on the instrument panel. It is to alert the driver and/or the repair technician that there is a problem with one or more of vehicle's
systems and may cause emissions to exceed federal standards. If the MIL illuminates with a steady light, it indicates that a problem has been detected and the vehicle should be serviced as soon as possible.
Under certain conditions, the dashboard light will blink or flash. This indicates a severe problem and flashing is intended to discourage vehicle operation. The vehicle onboard diagnostic system cannot turn the MIL off until necessary repairs are completed or the condition no
longer exists.
DTC -- Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) that identify which section of the emission control system has malfunctioned.
Enabling Criteria -- Also termed Enabling Conditions. They are the vehicle-specific events or conditions that must occur within the engine before the various monitors will set, or run. Some monitors require the vehicle to follow a prescribed “drive cycle” routine as part of the enabling criteria. Drive cycles vary among vehicles and for each monitor in any particular vehicle.
OBD II Drive Cycle -- A specific mode of vehicle operation that provides conditions required to set all the readiness monitors applicable to the vehicle to the “ready” condition. The purpose of completing an OBD II drive cycle is to force the vehicle to run its onboard diagnostics. Some form of a drive cycle needs to be performed after DTCs have been erased from the PCM’s memory or after the battery has been disconnected. Running through a vehicle’s complete drive cycle will “set” the readiness monitors so that future faults can be detected. Drive cycles vary depending on the vehicle and the monitor that needs to be reset. For vehicle specific drive cycle, consult the vehicle’s Owner’s Manual.
Freeze Frame Data -- When an emissions related fault occurs, the OBD II system not only sets a code but also records a snapshot of the vehicle operating parameters to help in identifying the problem. This set of values is referred to as Freeze Frame Data and may include
important engine parameters such as engine RPM, vehicle speed, air flow, engine load, fuel pressure, fuel trim value, engine coolant temperature, ignition timing advance, or closed loop status.

How Brakes Work
We all know that pushing down on the brake pedal slows a car to a stop. But how does this happen? How does your car transmit the force from your leg to its wheels? How does it multiply the force so that it is enough to stop something as big as a car?
When you depress your brake pedal, your car transmits the force from your foot to its brakes through a fluid. Since the actual brakes require a much greater force than you could apply with your leg, your car must also multiply the force of your foot. It does this in two ways:
Mechanical advantage (leverage)
Hydraulic force multiplication
The brakes transmit the force to the tires using friction, and the tires transmit that force to the road using friction also. Before we begin our discussion on the components of the brake system, we'll cover these three principles:
Leverage
Hydraulics
Friction
We'll discuss leverage and hydraulics in the next section.
Leverage and Hydraulics
In the figure below, a force F is being applied to the left end of the lever. The left end of the lever is twice as long (2X) as the right end (X). Therefore, on the right end of the lever a force of 2F is available, but it acts through half of the distance (Y) that the left end moves (2Y). Changing the relative lengths of the left and right ends of the lever changes the multipliers.
The basic idea behind any hydraulic system is very simple: Force applied at one point is transmitted to another point using an incompressible fluid, almost always an oil of some sort. Most brake systems also multiply the force in the process. Here you can see the simplest possible hydraulic system:
Simple hydraulic system
In the figure above, two pistons (shown in red) are fit into two glass cylinders filled with oil (shown in light blue) and connected to one another with an oil-filled pipe. If you apply a downward force to one piston (the left one, in this drawing), then the force is transmitted to the second piston through the oil in the pipe. Since oil is incompressible, the efficiency is very good -- almost all of the applied force appears at the second piston. The great thing about hydraulic systems is that the pipe connecting the two cylinders can be any length and shape, allowing it to snake through all sorts of things separating the two pistons. The pipe can also fork, so that one master cylinder can drive more than one slave cylinder if desired, as shown in here:
Master cylinder with two slaves
The other neat thing about a hydraulic system is that it makes force multiplication (or division) fairly easy. If you have read How a Block and Tackle Works or How Gear Ratios Work, then you know that trading force for distance is very common in mechanical systems. In a hydraulic system, all you have to do is change the size of one piston and cylinder relative to the other, as shown here:
Hydraulic multiplication
To determine the multiplication factor in the figure above, start by looking at the size of the pistons. Assume that the piston on the left is 2 inches (5.08 cm) in diameter (1-inch / 2.54 cm radius), while the piston on the right is 6 inches (15.24 cm) in diameter (3-inch / 7.62 cm radius). The area of the two pistons is Pi * r2. The area of the left piston is therefore 3.14, while the area of the piston on the right is 28.26. The piston on the right is nine times larger than the piston on the left. This means that any force applied to the left-hand piston will come out nine times greater on the right-hand piston. So, if you apply a 100-pound downward force to the left piston, a 900-pound upward force will appear on the right. The only catch is that you will have to depress the left piston 9 inches (22.86 cm) to raise the right piston 1 inch (2.54 cm).
Next, we'll look at the role that friction plays in brake systems.
Friction
Friction is a measure of how hard it is to slide one object over another. Take a look at the figure below. Both of the blocks are made from the same material, but one is heavier. I think we all know which one will be harder for the bulldozer to push.
To understand why this is, let's take a close look at one of the blocks and the table:
Even though the blocks look smooth to the naked eye, they are actually quite rough at the microscopic level. When you set the block down on the table, the little peaks and valleys get squished together, and some of them may actually weld together. The weight of the heavier block causes it to squish together more, so it is even harder to slide.
Different materials have different microscopic structures; for instance, it is harder to slide rubber against rubber than it is to slide steel against steel. The type of material determines the coefficient of friction, the ratio of the force required to slide the block to the block's weight. If the coefficient were 1.0 in our example, then it would take 100 pounds of force to slide the 100-pound (45 kg) block, or 400 pounds (180 kg) of force to slide the 400-pound block. If the coefficient were 0.1, then it would take 10 pounds of force to slide to the 100-pound block or 40 pounds of force to slide the 400-pound block.
So the amount of force it takes to move a given block is proportional to that block's weight. The more weight, the more force required. This concept applies for devices like brakes and clutches, where a pad is pressed against a spinning disc. The more force that presses on the pad, the greater the stopping force.
COEFFICIENTS
An interesting thing about friction is that it usually takes more force to break an object loose than to keep it sliding. There is a coefficient of static friction, where the two surfaces in contact are not sliding relative to each other. If the two surfaces are sliding relative to each other, the amount of force is determined by the coefficient of dynamic friction, which is usually less than the coefficient of static friction.
For a car tire, the coefficient of dynamic friction is much less than the coefficient of static friction. The car tire provides the greatest traction when the contact patch is not sliding relative to the road. When it is sliding (like during a skid or a burnout), traction is greatly reduced.
A Simple Brake System
Before we get into all the parts of an actual car brake system, let's look at a simplified system:
You can see that the distance from the pedal to the pivot is four times the distance from the cylinder to the pivot, so the force at the pedal will be increased by a factor of four before it is transmitted to the cylinder.
You can also see that the diameter of the brake cylinder is three times the diameter of the pedal cylinder. This further multiplies the force by nine. All together, this system increases the force of your foot by a factor of 36. If you put 10 pounds of force on the pedal, 360 pounds (162 kg) will be generated at the wheel squeezing the brake pads.
There are a couple of problems with this simple system. What if we have a leak? If it is a slow leak, eventually there will not be enough fluid left to fill the brake cylinder, and the brakes will not function. If it is a major leak, then the first time you apply the brakes all of the fluid will squirt out the leak and you will have complete brake failure.
The master cylinder on modern cars is designed to deal with these potential failures. Be sure to check out the article on How Master Cylinders and Combination Valves Work, and the rest of the articles in the brake series (see the links on the next page), to learn more.

Video: Matt Farah Reviews the 2014 Aston Martin Vanquish Read more: http://www.topspeed.com/cars/car-news/index2.html#ixzz2WolAjyXw
Matt Farah has owned an Aston Martin Vanquish for about nine years, so when it comes to knowing what to expect from the new-generation Vanquish, he should know best.
The 2014 Vanquish is powered by the same 6.0-liter V-12 setup that the 2012 model year uses, but with the output increased to 565 horsepower at 6,750 rpm and a peak torque of 457 pound-feet at 5,500 rpm. As a result, the car sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds and up to a top speed of 186 mph.
Along with the more powerful engine, the new Vanquish also features a new design language that we think is the best Aston Martin design hat we’ve seen in the past few years. There is also a highly modified interior, and a revised suspension and braking system.
Check out the video to see if the new-generation Vanquish met all his expectations.

How to match ignition key and remote control key on Nissan with scan tool?
1. Key initialization
Initialize the car key under following conditions:
(1) For earlier models, whose ECU do not support C/U INITIALIZATION, and Scan tool
can only read DTCs and clear DTCs from NA TS. For such models, the car key can be
initialized without decoder.
Operating steps: turn the ignition key to ON position and wait at least 5sec, then pull out the key and wait at least 5sec, after that, t he ignition key will be initialized automatically.
(2) For newer models, the initialization should be performed with scanner when the
following conditions meet:
(2.1) If the BCM is replaced, to initialize all ignition keys or door keys by decoder.
(2.2) If replace a used ECM, to in itialize all keys by decoder.
(2.3) If replace a new ECM, just turn the i gnition key on and wait 5sec and then turn off, the ignition key will be initia lized automatically. If the engine can’t be started, then the ignition key shall be initialized by decoder.
All existed ID numbers will be cleared as long as initialization performed. Therefore, it is necessary to register all the keys again. Otherwise, the engine can’t be started, and "DIFFERENCE OF KEY" or "LOCK MODE will be appeared on the display of scanner
when performing scan on OBD."
Before initializing the car key, the PIN codes shall be obtained. Following is the
explanation of PIN codes:
PIN codes can be separated into fixed code and random code, which can be differentiated
from the printed characters on label which sticked on NATS control unit.
Fixed code: if the label is prin ted with characters [A] or no characters, then the PIN code is a fixed code. 5523 is default, which is mainly applied on some 2000-2004 models, such as Cefiro A33, SUNNY and the other common models.
Random code(4 digits): can be obtained from Nissan Company. Each car has its unique
PIN codes. Before obtaining the PIN, customer must firstly provide a 5-digits identification code(consisted of numbe rs and letters)written on BCM, or read it from related BCM subsystem via Scan tool.
After obtained PIN code, Scan tool can be used to initialize the ignition key by accessing NATS system and perform appropriate DTCs diagnosis or key replacement via
re-programming operation. For details, please refer to steps below:
1. Select "C/U INITIALIZATION" mode;
2. Turn the ignition key to "ON" position;
3. Input password (PIN code);
4. Press "START" button to start the control unit initialization process;
5. "INITIALIZATION COMPLETED" indicates t hat the initialization of the IMMU and ECM
is finished;
If the fifth step shows "INITIALIZATION STOPPED, or FAILED", it indicates the
initialization by decoder uncompleted or failed.
6. Turn the ignition switch to "OFF" position and pull out the key.
7. Turn the ignition switch to "OFF" or "ON" position;
8. Read DTCs;
9. Replace IMMU if displaying “IMMU”, and then use X-431 or CONSULT-II to perform C/U
INTIALIZATION".
Perform "C/U INTIALIZATION again if displaying “No DTCs”
2. Ignition key registration
1. Insert the 1st key into ignition switch, and tu rn to "ON" position to remain for more than 5sec, and then turn the ignition key to "OFF" position and pull out the ignition key;
2. After 5sec, when the anti-theft indicator fl ashing, insert the 2nd key, and turn to "ON" position to remain for more than 5sec, and then turn the ignition key to "OFF" position and pull out the ignition key;
3. Repeat the above-mentioned steps which can match up to five keys;
4. Open the door or start the engine to exit the key registration;
5. Confirm each key (remote controller) can start the engine as the normal.
If the remote control keys can start the engine, pay attention to whether the remote
controller can open and lock the door. Otherwise , the remote controller must be matched.
There are two matching methods below:
Method 1:
1. Close all the doors(the operator shall be inside the car), and lock the driver's door
2. Within 10 seconds, insert the ignition ke y and pull out, which shall be repeated for more than six times;
3. Hazard warning lights will flash twice;
4. Turn the ignition switch to ACC position;
5. At this time, press any one button on the new remote controller once. (Hazard warning
lights will flash twice);
6. If copy another anti-theft remote controller, turn the "LOCK" button on driver’s side to "UNLOCK" and then to "LOCK", then repeat step 5;
7. If matching is completed, just open the car door and pull out the ignition key.
Method 2:
1. After opened the trunk, close and lock all the doors;
2. Within 10 seconds, insert the ignition ke y and pull out, which shall be repeated for more than six times;
3. Open the driver's door and then lock;
4. At this time, press "LOCK" button onc e on new anti-theft remote controller;
5. If copy another anti-theft remote control keys, to repeat the steps 2-4.
Intelligent Key Registration:
1. Before the registration of intelligent ke y, firstly register the ignition key.
2. Turn the ignition key to ON position, register the intelligent key via REGIST I-KEY ID
function of I-KEY system. During the registration, the intelligent key shall be inside the car. Besides, press any one button on intelligent key.
Notes: difference between intelligent key and remote control key.
Remote control key: starts the engine by remote control the ignition key chip inside,
therefore, after the ignition ke y registration, just insert the ignition key inside the remote control key can start the vehicle via remote controlling. Such as: TIIDA of 2007 and 2008.
However, after such key matching is completed, the remote controller shall be matched for
door opening and locking.
Intelligent Key: such key has its own intelligent chip inside, therefore, after the ignition key registration, the intelligent key also must be matched before starting the engine. Refer to Intelligent Key Registration for matching method.
DTCs of NATS
The most common DTCs of NATS are P1610, P1611, P1612, P1614, and P1615, etc.
Their relative meanings are as follows:
[P1610]: LOCK MODE (dead lock mode);
[P1611]: ID DISCORD, IMMU-ECM (the ID signals between IMMU and ECM are
inconsistent, which means the system shall be initialized);
[P1612]: CHAIN OF ECM-IMMU (a fault on NATS communication line between ECM and
IMMU);
[P1614]: CHAIN OF IMMU-KEY (a fault on the line between IMMU and KEY which causes
the BCM can’t receive the key ID signal);
[P1615]: DIFFERENCE OF KEY (BCM has received the ID signal of key and identified it
as the illegal )
NATS will enter into dead lock mode if using an unregistered or invalid key to start the
engine for more than five times, at this time, even though the correct car key also can not normally start the engine. To unlock the mode, the system shall be initialized again. If the detected DTCs are related to engine system, the related DTCs will also display on ECM.
Before clearing the DTCs memory on NATS, firstly check the DTCs on engine system
because while deleting the self-diagnostic codes of NATS, the memory on the "engine"
self-diagnosis system will also be cleared.
